As a child, I had no idea that Michael Jackson, the King of Pop was so into beets… who knew??? To devote a whole song to his love of beets is something really special. So I’ve decided to dedicate this blog post to Mr. Jackson (screaming Shah-mone, while grabbing my treasure) . But all jokes aside, beets are in season and that’s plenty to sing about. Besides being in season, and being fantastic enough to be a muse for “MJ”, beets happen to be a natural aphrodisiac, that were used in ancient Rome. (go figure, that’s worth a dance routine). Science has also validated that claim. The boron (check your periodic table of elements) in beets which are involved in producing human sex hormones (“Love beets, fun,” 2013). Basically beets are like a natural Viagra. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it. Beets also contain betaine which helps to relax the mind, and tryptophan , the substance found in chocolate that contribute to a sense of well being (“Love beets, fun,” 2013). How’s that for a feel good food? Add to those wonderful facts beets are a whole food. This lovely veggie can be eaten from root to greens. That my friends, you can’t beet with a stick! Try this simple, tasty and nutritious recipe and moonwalk your way into better health.
Toss 2 thinly sliced apples, 4 thinly sliced celery stalks (with leaves) and 1 minced shallot in a bowl with the juice of 1 lemon. Peel 1 beet, then slice into matchsticks and add to the bowl. Toss in 1 teaspoon sugar, 3 tablespoons chopped walnuts, 3 tablespoons olive oil, and salt and pepper. Let stand 10 minutes, then serve on a bed of sliced endive. Enjoy!
